EXPECTATIONS? INTERPRET-ATIONS?

CHEN: "I believe this kind of escape—wanting to hide, wanting to leave, but having to face everyone—is universal."

HO: "Facing a winding and thorny road, as long as there is a light above one's head, everything will be fine...."
During the interview with Chen, I asked her how she views the gap between her own understanding and the understanding of others when presenting such personal expressions in symbolic images. In response, she explained that although the world she creates is personal, it is also a common experience. As she noted, "I believe this kind of escape—wanting to hide, wanting to leave, but having to face everyone—is universal." Furthermore, she also showed a positive view towards misunderstandings of her works. In her words, "I chose these images based on certain external conditions. They should be readable. If the viewer does not understand the reasons why I originally chose them, I think it is acceptable. I think the work can remain a vague space. Even if the viewer misunderstands the work, I still think that misunderstanding is interesting. I don't reject being misunderstood. Sometimes I even try to leave room for it so that there is more space for interpretation."
Regarding Ho's interpretation of Incubation and Tortuous, she perceived a sense of overflowing anxiety mixed with sparks of expectation. Ho stressed her personal belief, “facing a winding and thorny road, as long as there is a light above one's head, everything will be fine.” The anxiety can be viewed in a reassuring manner. In fact, Ho showed more concern for Chen's lack of confidence in herself rather than her uneasiness and struggles in her works. She expressed her belief in Chen's ability to express herself powerfully in her paintings, and that her nervous and hesitant state stems from her own lack of self-confidence. She stated, "I recognize how outstanding Chen's work is, and everything will be fine at the moment of opening.” Ho's reflections are not just on her understanding and interpretation of Chen's works, but on a higher level of understanding of Chen as a "person" and a "friend," which is touching and affecting.
